WHAT'S UP MAVVIES. If you've followed me for a while you'll have heard me talking about your 'raving fanbase' and why it's fucking up your business no-end not knowing who yours are.
Let me tell you about a game-changing discovery I made recently. I stumbled upon an incredible business network that felt like it was custom-made for me. It all started with a virtual networking call, and in just 20 seconds of my introduction (which, by the way, barely gave me enough time to do it justice), magic happened.
I did what I always do – I owned up to being a bit of a weirdo and let a few colourful words fly. And you know what? Within those same 20 seconds, I had five LinkedIn requests from people saying, "Hey, you said it like it is, let's be mates!" And you know what? We totally could.
In this little community, I shared a bit about myself, posted a picture, and talked about what I do for a living. What followed were some really meaningful conversations with people who truly resonated with my message. It felt like coming home, finding a tribe of sweary, anti-corporate heroes who understood my vibe.
Now, let's talk about the not-so-great networking experiences. I've been on my fair share of calls, in person and online, where things didn't quite click. You know the type – "generic Johnny Corporate number one" who spouts off jargon that might as well be a foreign language. You try to follow along, but it's like trying to catch smoke with your bare hands.
But here's the thing, I'm not here to poke fun at Johnny Corporates. They're good folks, just not my folks. We run in different circles, and that's perfectly okay. It's actually in everyone's best interest to kindly steer clear of each other.
Let me tell you, I've worked with clients who weren't the right fit, and it's never a smooth ride. At best, there's an awkward elephant in the room during a project, and at worst, you're dealing with rudeness and patronizing behavior. And let me tell you, if you're mean to my team, we're not going to get along.
But we can't predict the future, right? Some experiences are bound to happen. The key, though, is to minimize the risk right out of the gate by knowing exactly who your dream clients are – those you'd love to work with in an ideal world, sans any unpleasantness.
I've learned a lot from a business strategist I follow, Lisa Johnson. She emphasizes being able to answer a hundred questions about your ideal client. Recently, I even got some feedback from Lisa herself, and one thing was crystal clear: knowing your ideal client inside and out is non-negotiable.
So, who are my ideal clients? They're mavericks, the unorthodox and independent-minded individuals who don't fit the corporate mold. No Johnny Corporates here. These are the people who have felt like outsiders or weirdos for much of their lives. They reject the status quo, favouring a bold, anti-establishment approach. They're not afraid to break the rules and, you know what, they're not big fans of jargon either.
I could go on, but you get the idea. The point is, when I record this podcast, I imagine you all sitting there, eager to hear what I have to say. I don't have an audience in front of me, but I know how I need to show up, how I need to speak, and what I need to convey. It's all about attracting those dream customers, my raving fanbase.
As I gear up to plan my business strategy for 2024 and beyond, this step – knowing my ideal customer – is priority number one. It's the foundation of everything I've built, from the name to the branding to the products I offer. It's the bread and butter, the roadmap to building my rebel empire.
So, here's my challenge to you: be brutally honest with yourself. Who would you absolutely love to work with in an ideal world? Put on your blinkers, cut out the noise, and focus on them. It's a game-changer, trust me.
Alright, you lovely lot, that's a wrap for today. Take some time to envision your dream clients and watch how it transforms your business. Until next time, have a fantastic week!
If you love the idea of building your own little rebel empire but don't know where to start, this is for YOU.
